Power line safety is especially important when beginning harvest season because farm equipment such as combines, grain carts, augers, and elevators can come close to or contact overhead power lines. Contact with a power line can cause serious injury, fires, or equipment damage. Before starting harvest, operators should identify the locations of overhead lines, maintain a safe distance, and make sure raised equipment is lowered before moving. Always look up and stay aware of your surroundings. If equipment contacts a power line, stay inside the cab unless there is an immediate fire or other life-threatening emergency, warn others to stay away, and call 911 and the electric utility.
