Capital Credits

Southern Iowa Electric is a cooperative owned by its members. As a cooperative, Southern Iowa Electric does not earn profits. Instead, any revenues or other income over and above the cost of doing business in the year are considered margins. Each member of the cooperative is allocated a percentage of these margins each year based on the amount of power they purchased from us. Capital credits are not the same as cash or stock.

Who is eligible to receive a capital credit refund?

As a current or former member of Southern Iowa Electric Cooperative you are entitled to a percentage of the margins earned for the years you purchased power.

When will I receive a capital credit refund?

Each year the cooperative board of directors approves a percentage of a prior year's allocations for repayment to the membership. By refunding only a portion at a time, the cooperative is able to maintain a stable financial structure.

Why does the cooperative hold capital credit allocations?

Capital credits are held by the cooperative in the member's capital credit account until paid back in cash. This membership capital allows us to conduct our daily business and to help reduce the cost of borrowing and hold down rates.

If I move what can I do to ensure I receive a capital credit refund?

If you are planning on moving from our service territory please make sure our office has your social security number and a forwarding address. This will allow us to send your capital credit refund to you. It is important to notify us each time you move until your capital credit account has been completely paid out.

How can I check to see if I have unclaimed capital credits?

Southern Iowa Electric is required to publish a listing of all members who have unclaimed capital credit refunds. This list is published annually in our newsletter. If the refund is not claimed within three years it becomes donated capital of the cooperative.
