Honor Flight Network
SIEC, in partnership with Associated Electric Cooperative, is proud to have sponsored two deserving veterans through the National Honor Flight Network. Korean War Veteran Walter O’Lear from Ottumwa, Iowa and World War II Veteran Robert Frink of Burlington, Iowa boarded a flight to Washington DC on August 29th. The two veterans visited the Smithsonian Institute, the Air Force Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington Cemetery, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. On the flight home, there was one last “Mail Call” in which the veterans received letters and cards from family, friends, and school children. Walter O’Lear said, “They surprised us with mail call on the flight home, it was one of the most inspirational moments of the trip, I was truly touched.” Even though the flight home landed at 10:00 p.m., all the veterans were greeted by a receiving line of over 100 people when they arrived. Walter said American flags were waving, and each person shook his hand, looked him in the eye and said thank you... it was a trip of a life-time. Check out the photos Walter shared with us of his trip on our Facebook page! Thank you Walter O’Lear, Robert Frink, and all our veterans who made the sacrifice to serve and protect our country! You can make a donation to the program or maybe you know a veteran that you would like to sign up to go on this wonderful trip to Washington DC to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifices.
